Chattel mortgage, hire purchase or lease: which is right for my business?

A chattel mortgage if you want to own the asset from day one, claim the GST upfront and have the option of a balloon. Hire purchase if you prefer a fixed schedule with the lender holding title until the last payment; its GST treatment has matched a chattel mortgage since 2012. A lease if you want to hand the asset back at the end and spread the GST over the payments.

Chattel mortgages are the default for most small businesses because of the upfront GST credit and the balloon option. Leases suit equipment that dates quickly, such as IT and medical technology, where ownership is a liability. Your accountant's view on depreciation and the instant asset write-off should settle it, and we are happy to run the numbers with them.

Can I get equipment finance without financials?

Usually, yes. Lenders run low-doc or "matrix" approvals for businesses with an ABN of two years or more, GST registration, clean credit and either property ownership or a 20 per cent deposit. Limits are commonly $150,000 to $250,000 per asset. Replacing a like-for-like asset is the easiest case of all.

Above those limits, or for a new ABN or a specialised asset, the lender wants financials or an accountant letter. Approval still runs in days rather than weeks. Private sales attract a small rate loading and need an inspection and a clear title check, which we arrange.

How does the $20,000 instant asset write-off work with finance?

The write-off applies per asset, excluding GST, for businesses under $10 million turnover, and it does not matter that the asset is financed. A $19,000 piece of equipment on a chattel mortgage is deductible in full in the year you start using it; assets over $20,000 go into the small business pool at 15 per cent then 30 per cent.

The threshold is now permanent from 1 July 2026, so there is no end-of-year rush. The $150,000 and temporary full expensing figures still quoted on some sites ended on 30 June 2023.

What is the car limit and does it affect my work vehicle?

The car limit, $69,883 for 2026–27, caps the depreciation you can claim and the GST credit (one eleventh of the limit, about $6,353) on a car, even under a chattel mortgage. A ute or van with a payload over one tonne, or a vehicle carrying nine or more passengers, is not a "car" and is not capped.

Financing a $110,000 dual-cab with a one-tonne-plus payload therefore gets the full GST credit and depreciation; financing a $110,000 SUV does not. The difference is often tens of thousands over the life of the asset, and it is worth knowing before you choose the vehicle.

Is a balloon payment a good idea?

It lowers the monthly repayment by deferring a lump sum, typically 20 to 40 per cent, to the end of the term. It suits assets that hold value and businesses that intend to trade up and refinance the balloon. It is a poor idea if the asset will be worth less than the balloon when it falls due.

We set balloons against realistic end-of-term values, not against the lowest possible repayment, and we tell you what the refinance will look like when it arrives.

Asset finance questions.

Straight answers. If yours isn't here, ask cinchi (bottom right) or book a chat.

01What can be financed?+
Cars, utes, vans and trucks; trailers; excavators, loaders and other yellow goods; agricultural machinery; medical, dental and veterinary equipment; manufacturing plant; fit-outs; IT and solar. Second-hand and private-sale assets too, within age limits.
02How old can the asset be?+
Most lenders want vehicles no older than 12 to 15 years and yellow goods no older than about 20 years at the end of the term. Older assets go to specialist lenders at higher rates.
03Can a new business get asset finance?+
Yes, with a deposit, financials or an accountant letter, or a director who owns property. Rates are higher for an ABN under two years and come down as the business establishes.
04Are repayments tax deductible?+
Interest and depreciation are deductible on a chattel mortgage or hire purchase; lease payments are deductible in full. The split depends on business use. Your accountant confirms the treatment.
05Can I pay the loan out early?+
Yes. Fixed-rate asset loans usually carry an early termination fee or interest adjustment, which we disclose before you sign.
06Is a novated lease the same thing?+
No. A novated lease is a salary-packaging arrangement for an employee's car, with the employer making payments. We can arrange both; note the FBT exemption for plug-in hybrids ended on 1 April 2025, while battery EVs remain exempt.
